Boreal…

Canadian singer-songwriters Tannis Slimmon, Katherine Wheatley and Angie Nussey form the powerhouse trio Boreal. Their album Winterbirds earned Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Album, Ensemble, and Vocal Group of the Year. On stage, they are warm, funny, and deeply connecting, with exquisite harmonies and inventive vocal arrangements. Rooted in Ontario and Manitoba, Boreal weaves their stories into a unique sound where three distinct voices—earthy, improvisational, and untamed—come together in thrilling, moving songs.

Well, the western leg of our tour has come to an end, and our time with “Wind and Water” has given us so many stories to carry home. We mention Wind and Water because of an incredible statue we saw in Oak Bay, Victoria called “Winds of Time,” created by Linda Lindsay. One of our generous billet families, Susanne, told us about it… and it absolutely lived up to her description! We are so very grateful for the organizers, planners, food providers, kindness givers, comedic relief generators, wisdom sharers, young smarties, and feline spooners who made our journey so wonderful. It is not easy to host three gals… each with our own special needs — from room temperatures, coffee intensity, protein and carb requirements, laundry needs, to toothpick emergencies, hair fiascos, and varying levels of sleep deprivation. We admire anyone brave enough to take this on. On this tour, we must thank our incredible hosts: Tannis’ family in Comox — not only for hosting us, but for being part of our dress rehearsal before the first show; Tony Turner in Nanaimo — for giving up his whole house to us, returning for a breathwork meditation the next morning, and making us breakfast; Susanne and John in Victoria — for three days of being mothered with their food, company, and kindness; and Katherine’s family in Calgary — pulling us through the end of our tour, hanging out in what feels like the highest high-rise in the city, with walking access to downtown. You all made this journey unforgettable. When we planned this tour, we had a vision of “getting our feet wet” on the west coast. We had no idea how many people would show up — and we were fine with any number. But having sold out 3 of the 5 venues we performed in, we were absolutely touched to the core. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to our shows, bought our recycled T-shirts, CDs, and books, chatted with us, and made this experience so special. We seriously can’t wait to come back!!xoxKatherine, Tannis and Angie <3PS. Special thanks to Doug Cox, Tony Turner, Longevity John, S&J, Peter May, Vic Bell and their mighty crews for being concert whisperers! See MoreSee Less
